PTOSIS

Ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelids), may be a congenital or acquired problem. Infants and young children are evaluated to determine the possibilities and timing for surgical treatment. In most children surgical repair is done if ptosis is significant at age four to five years of age. There are some indications for ptosis surgery in infants or toddlers: the presence of a backward head tilt in a child, or potential visual problem associated with ptosis. Surgical repair may involve levator muscle (the muscle that involves the upper eyelids) tightening or shortening or suspension of the upper eyelid with suture donor material or silicone material.

The choice of the procedure will depend on functions of the levator muscle in children and with poor function, eyelid suspension is the procedure of choice. Ptosis which develops in adulthood is typically associated with good function of the levator muscle and requires shortening or tightening the levator muscle. The procedure is customized for each patient depending on a number of factors.
